This painting tutorial shows the process of creating a large atmospheric oil painting.
Here I offer an insight into my technique and share the painting tips I learned over the years, like painting the glitter with a palette knife or flicking the brush to create the splashing effect.
Hope you will find it useful or at least entertaining.
The original seascape painting «Vision» measures 48x48 inches and is available for sale on EvaVolfSeascapes.etsy.com
I used only four oil colors to create this tender purple seascape:
titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt umber and alizarin crimson (any red will do). I chose purple as a dominant color, brown as complementary and white as an accent.
I also used Liquin Original as a medium, but any oil or mineral spirits will do.
This painting took me 2 sessions x 4 hours and I let it dry completely for a week in between them.
I used a reference photo from a hazy morning in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

This is another color that I use constantly. I almost eat it. Today we will see how @DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone Sienna behaves in combination with some other colors from my minimal travel set. For the object, I chose a small nice street in Italy. 13 x 11 inches, Arches paper.

Friends, I greet you. «Alpine lake» (Austria) picture number #5 in 2020. Size 50/70 cm. Painting for sale: www.picture-russia.ru/painter/4994
Alpine traditions
Even the very first settlers in the alpine regions of Western Austria preferred to live at high altitudes. It was more difficult to get to them than in the valleys, which were often swampy, prone to mudflows and without paths. Thus, the supposedly insurmountable borders of the mountains were already conquered in the early history of the region, and the region was divided in half by trade routes stretching to the Mediterranean Sea. The best evidence of this was the discovery in 1991 of Ötz Ice, whose body was discovered at an altitude of 10,500 feet on the Ötztal Alps glacier, and which traded about 5,300 years ago in the area surrounding Lake Garda.
The way that Ötzi moved between different valleys and levels of vegetation lives on to this day in many of the “moving” traditions of alpine culture. These practices are often closely associated with cattle breeding, which from the very beginning has been a decisive economic factor for settlers. For example, mountain «epaulettes for cattle» are one of the most striking traditions that are still preserved in the alpine regions of Austria. In early summer, in the vicinity of Witsun, pastoralists and milkmen drive cows to mountain meadows, and in mid-September, animals are usually driven back to the valley. The last stage, in particular, is accompanied by festive ceremonies. If the summer has passed without any serious incidents, the herds are specially designed for this occasion. With cows with a headdress from dwarf pine, as well as with thistle and milkweed.
Geography of Austria
Topographic map of Austria showing cities with a population of over 100,000
Austria is mainly a mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. Central Eastern Alps, Northern Alps Limestone and Southern Alps Limestone are all partially in Austria. Of the total area of Austria (84,000 km 2 or 32,433 sq. Miles), only about a quarter can be considered low-lying, and only 32% of the countrys territory is below 500 meters (1640 feet). The Alps of western Austria are somewhat giving way to the lowlands and plains in the eastern part of the country.
Austria lies between 46 ° and 49 ° north latitude and 9 ° and 18 ° east longitude.
It can be divided into five regions, the largest of which is the Eastern Alps, which make up 62% of the countrys total area. The Austrian foothills at the foot of the Alps and the Carpathians account for about 12%, and in the east, the foothills and areas adjacent to the periphery of the Pannoni lowland account for about 12% of the total land area. The second large mountainous region (much lower than the Alps) is located in the north. Known as the Austrian granite plateau, it is located in the central part of the Bohemian Mass and makes up 10% of the territory of Austria. The Austrian part of the Vienna basin is the remaining 4%.
In phytogeographic terms, Austria belongs to the central European province of the Circumboreal region within the Boreal kingdom. According to WWF, the territory of Austria can be divided into four ecoregions: mixed forests of Central Europe, mixed forests of Pannonian origin, coniferous and mixed forests of the Alps and broad-leaved forests of Western Europe.
Friends, I welcome everyone to my channel UVN Art. Picture «Summer» (Sunny landscape). Artist-Viktor Yushkevich. #12 photo of 2020.
In this picture you see a picture that I called «Summer.»
I think this time of year is the most unusual. The moment when everything around freezes is priceless. You can see how light penetrates through the trees. The path leading to something beautiful. And there in the distance you can see the lake, the sounds of which can be heard for hours. Flowers that give a smile with one glance at them. I would even say that this is an early summer morning. When only the sun emits its first rays that you want to catch. Time to lift everything around. So many trees, so many stories in each of them. At this time, you just want to be there. Go through the tropics and don’t think where it will lead you. Looking at this work, I don’t even want to say something, I just want to be silent…
Drawing a picture called «Summer», I want you to feel there, in this whole atmosphere. Plunging into the sounds of the forest, birds fly nearby.
I believe that this will affect your heart too! Learn to see beauty in everything!
Friends, you can see the full picture on my new platform www.patreon.com/UVN_Art
On this platform, I will tell you many of my secrets to successful painting. I invite you to subscribe to my page, thereby helping to support financially my project that I am opening for you.
I painted this picture, remembering the summer, if you look closely at my landscape, you can see all the beauty of our wonderful land. The clouds draw their beautiful pattern in the sky, and shine in different colors. It has always been an important thing for me to turn my eyes to heaven, not only to learn how to draw and convey their mood, but also because we all will sooner or later end up in the next world, and every time I draw them I imagine what the sky will be like after me will not.
Last year I visited the same place as in my picture.
The expanses of our region are unusually beautiful, and I tried to convey this in my picture and convey the mood that I once experienced.
In this picture, there is almost everything that a person loves (such as me)
Here flows a small river in which various fish and insects live, next to it is the lush green grass, illuminated by the sun.
If you look at the grass, you can see that it is gently caressed by the wind, swaying it in different directions.
Flowers fill this landscape with their colorfulness and abundance, giving their aroma for many kilometers.
The forest shines from the fact that the sun abundantly gave its sunbeams and wade through the leaves to the ground.
In this picture you can feel clean and warm air that pleases me with its unforgettableness.
A horse is walking in the background, it is pleasant for her to walk on such an abundant grass in the backyard.
Two storks fly over the earth frolic, looking for something.
In the summer I often travel in nature to paint, take brushes, paints, canvas and paint the beautiful expanses of our world.
